STATEMENT: Costello welcomes announcement from State Examination Commission of special arrangement for individuals with Epilepsy.

Patrick Costello TD for Dublin South Central today welcomed a circular from the State Examination Commission of special arranges for epileptics.

He began, “Individuals with epilepsy have, for a number of years, faced uncertainty around examinations and what happens if they suffer a seizure. I have raised this in the Dáil a number of times in recent years. Last year I was satisfied to see special ad hoc arrangements announced but it came just a week before the exams began. This arrangement, a month out, is timely and is to be welcomed.”

“I have worked closely with Epilepsy Ireland to highlight the specific needs of those with epilepsy. State exams are a high pressure environment and are stressful for all students. This is particularly acute for those with epilepsy, with further enhances the likelihood of a seizure.”

Concluding he remarked, “This circular today from the commission establishes a permanent policy in relation to exams going forward. It provides clarity to those individuals that epilepsy will not prove to be a barrier to their educational progression. It is a welcome move and one which will provide solace to thousands of families around the country.”
